Special half-day workshops with Adobe’s Russell Brown and Artist Bonny Pierce Lhotka
Offered for students
Saturday, January 21 & Sunday, January 22, 2012
The workshops are being offered as an extension of the programming for the upcoming exhibit Digital Darkroom, a group show featuring the work of 17 artists from the U.S., France and the U.K. that explores the intersection of art and technology. Digital Darkroom opens to the public in Los Angeles on December 17, 2011 and runs through May 28, 2012.
Instructors:
Russell Brown is a Senior Creative Director at Adobe Systems Incorporated, an Emmy Award-winning instructor and the curatorial advisor for Digital Darkroom. He was instrumental in the introduction of Adobe Photoshop in 1990, which transformed the techniques used to manipulate images. Renowned for his creative artistry and his entertaining style as a Photoshop teacher, he has helped the world's leading photographers, publishers, art directors and artists to master techniques that enable their digital creations.
Bonny Pierce Lhotka, a featured artist in Digital Darkroom, is the author of “Digital Alchemy: Printmaking Techniques for Fine Art, Photograph and Mixed Media” and producer of the Digital Art Studio Seminars series of instructional DVDs. Lhotka uses Photoshop and tactile techniques with traditional media to create distinctive handmade images.
Topics covered:
· Russell will lead the class in an introduction to using mobile software Apps with lots of opportunity for creative expression! Props, costumes, tin-type backgrounds, printed backgrounds and a professional lighting kit by Westcott will be made available to help students take fantastic mobile photos.
· Russell will then share tips and techniques for enhancing the photos, how to achieve a classic look and feel, and finally how to prepare the final image for printing.
· Students will learn to work quickly, moving images from their mobile device to an Epson printer in a matter of minutes! This hands-on experience will be a fun – and surprising way to learn about exciting mobile software technologies.
· Bonny will teach the "cooking" of aluminum plates to create antiques surfaces that look decades old. After distressing, washing and cooking the plates, participates will compose and alter both the plate and the image that has been printed on a transfer film.
· Bonny will show how to easily transfer your print to the aged plate resulting in a new Vintage Tintype look. The magic happens by using SuperSauce™ to create one of a kind antique looking photographic transfers.
· Bonny will show examples of finished work and discuss the importance of exploring inkjet printing that goes beyond ink on paper. Be ready to bring the past to the present with this innovative printmaking process.
Who can attend:
Students enrolled in college level photography courses. No professional experience need.
Fee: There is no charge for the workshop or any materials.
